European Respiratory Society Partners with Imagetwin to Strengthen Research Integrity Across Its Journals
The European Respiratory Society (ERS), one of the leading medical organisations in the respiratory field, is implementing Imagetwin’s image integrity screening across its journal portfolio. Imagetwin is integrated directly into ERS’s existing editorial system through ScholarOne (by Silverchair), which brings automated checks into the workflow editors already use, with no extra steps or tools to manage.
Submissions are now screened for image duplication, manipulation, plagiarism, and AI-generated content at the point of submission, so editorial teams can catch integrity issues before a manuscript reaches peer review rather than after.
Journals across the field face image integrity pressures such as: rising submission volumes, increasingly sophisticated manipulation techniques, and a growing share of AI-generated figures in submitted manuscripts. Automated screening is therefore becoming a standard part of editorial workflows.
Patrick Starke, Imagetwin co-founder and CEO, shares about the partnership:
“We’re excited about one of Europe’s leading societies implementing Imagetwin in their workflow. ERS is using it through ScholarOne, which makes the workflow even smoother for their editorial team, image integrity screening happens automatically, right where editors already work.”
Elin Reeves, Director of Publications at ERS adds to that:
“Imagetwin has already become an essential tool in the research integrity checks we perform for manuscripts submitted to our journals. In the current environment of increased submissions and where editorial board and reviewer time is precious, we can perform automated screening of images at an early stage to highlight and address any potential issues before publication.”

Frequently asked questions
What is Expert Review?
Expert Review is an expert investigation service for complex image integrity cases, launched through an exclusive partnership between Imagetwin and Molecular Connections. Once Imagetwin flags an image, Molecular Connections’ domain experts can look into the concern in more depth and give editorial teams a detailed assessment and recommendations.
How long does an Expert Review investigation take?
The experts deliver a detailed investigation and recommendations within 24 to 48 hours. Publishers can request a review of a single image, one flagged manuscript, or a batch of manuscripts.
Why do publishers need expert investigation after automated image integrity detection?
Automated detection can flag a potential image concern in seconds. Deciding what the flag means and what to do about it often takes deeper domain expertise. Expert Review gives editorial teams on-demand access to that expertise, so they don’t have to build specialist skills in-house or look for outside experts each time a concern comes up.
